Winner: Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. The Democrat won the seat in Florida’s 20th Congressional District to succeed the late U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings. Not only will Cherfilus-McCormick be the first Haitian American member of Congress from Florida, she also secures a seat that should remain a Democratic stronghold, depending on how the redistricting process develops.
Loser: Ileana Garcia. Garcia made some baffling comments in an interview with CBS 4, arguing the Black experience today is “not at all” different from that of other Americans. “That’s why we had (Barack) Obama as President,” she said. “That’s the best example in the world.”
