In a memo issued over the weekend, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged that the league’s efforts to promote diversity in hiring head coaches “have been unacceptable.”
The league’s Rooney Rule requires teams to interview minorities when hiring head coaches or senior operations positions. However, former Dolphins coach Brian Flores sued the NFL over the issue saying those interviews were mostly shams to satisfy the rule.
Goodell said the league will examine “policies, guidelines and initiatives relating to diversity, equity and inclusion, including as they relate to gender.”
He added the league will use “outside experts to assist in this review.”
