Peacocks and peahens within municipal borders in Miami-Dade could face relocation or extermination thanks to an ordinance the County Commission passed 5-4.
The item by Raquel Regalado allows cities to develop individualized peafowl-mitigation strategies to rid themselves of the pretty-to-look-at but bothersome, invasive and property-damaging birds. Such plans can include “humane euthanasia.”
Cities wishing to evict the birds must present their plans to the County Commission for approval on a case-by-case basis.
Some opposed the move. Danielle Cohen Higgins said residents of her district have “learned to live with these peacocks,” adding that residents “lose it” when anyone harms them.
