Broward County Public Schools’ interim superintendent became its permanent one Wednesday as the district’s board voted to offer Vickie Cartwright the permanent job.
She was chosen over the other finalist, Michael Gaal, retired Air Force colonel and deputy chancellor of Washington public schools.
Cartwright came to the country’s sixth-largest school district after serving as superintendent in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Broward public schools are facing numerous challenges. Cartwright led the district through its controversial decision to buck Gov. Ron DeSantis’ prohibition against mandatory student masks. Now, a state lawmaker proposes fining those defiant school districts that required student masks $200 million.
