Huge cruise ship too big for Key West pier, encroaches on Navy-only waters

by Margaret Willard

A cruise ship mooring Sunday in Key West was so big it extended illegally into Navy-exclusive waters.

Photos by the Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships show the 1,004-foot Celebrity Apex at privately owned Pier B with its rear extending into Naval Air Station Key West’s Truman Harbor.

NAS Key West confirmed the violation, adding it had requested state action. A similar infringement occurred in 2014.

The ships are too large for the pier, Safer Cleaner Ships Treasurer Arlo Haskell said.

“It would be practically impossible,” he said, “for them to fit into that area given how a boat sways.”
