Aventura City Commissioner Jonathan Evans was remembered for the “intellect, wit and care” he brought to public service after his death at 72 this week.
Evans, born an Englishman, won his first elected office unopposed in 2020. An undisclosed illness hospitalized him last November, however.
“Our city mourns the loss of a wonderful human being, public servant, and friend,” Aventura Mayor Enid Weisman said in a statement.
A special election for his seat will be announced next month.
A retired Massachusetts Institute of Technology metallurgy researcher, Evans raised funds for first-generation Florida International University students and cheered on Boston sports teams.
