Miami Stingarees fall in state title game

by Margaret Willard

The Miami High girls basketball team fell just short in the Class 7-A state championship game, falling to Orlando Dr. Phillips High 47-45 in Lakeland.

Miami High (20-9) led by eight points with 5:03 left led Dr. Phillips was back in the game when they snagged five turnovers that led to 14 points.

The Stingarees have played for a state title every year since 2018, but their only championship came in 2020.

“They gave everything that’s asked,” Miami Coach Sam Baumgarten said. “They try to appease me all the time. They’re probably more upset than I am, and I love them.”
