Key West bucks legislation piling official status on strawberry shortcake

Strawberry shortcake is now standing tall as the state’s official dessert.

The legislation that proved berry sweet to lawmakers was one of the first bills that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed out of this Session. Promoters of red, white and yum see elevating the treat as a homage to the state’s role in spreading strawberries throughout the land in winter.

But some feel that this new designation steps on Key lime pie’s status as the state’s official pie.

Earlier this week, Key West city commissioners unanimously voted to make Key lime pie the city’s official dessert, the Miami Herald is reporting.
