The Miami Dolphins placed the franchise tag on tight end Mike Gesicki, denying him the chance to find a more lucrative deal on the free-agent market.
If Gesicki plays in the upcoming season on the tag, he’ll make $10.931 million. That likely is far less than he would have received from another team in free agency.
Both sides can still negotiate a long-term deal, but it must be completed by the July 15 deadline, the Miami Herald is reporting.
Gesicki was a second-round pick in 2015.
He has 199 career receptions for 2,255 yards, third-most for tight ends in team history.
