After lengthy dispute as to how much should go to the project, lawmakers have agreed to apportion $1 million for the construction of a memorial to honor the 98 victims of the collapsed Champlain Towers South condo in Surfside.
Details are sparse on the project. That’s intentional, according to joint budget plan, which said the funds will only be released upon receipt of the memorial’s design, placement, costs and timeline.
The Senate originally sought $2.5 million for the project. To find middle ground, the House doubled its first offer from $500,000 to $1 million, a sum the Senate eventually accepted.
