When the Miami Marlins open the season on Friday at San Francisco, right-hander Sandy Alcantara will once again be their starting pitcher.
It is the third Opening Day start for Alcantara, joining Josh Johnson and Josh Beckett as the only Marlins with that distinction.
Alcantara had a deceiving 9-15 record last season. He had a 3.19 ERA in 33 starts but was hampered by a lack of run support. The Marlins ranked No. 29 out of 30 teams with 623 runs scored in 2021.
“I think he’s still getting better and he has room to get better,” Manager Don Mattingly said.
