Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins and Miami City Commissioner Ken Russell will compete in a Democratic Primary to determine who will face incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. María Elvira Salazar this November.
Higgins, who won office in a June 2018 upset, is forgoing a second potential term representing Miami-Dade’s fifth district to run for federal office. Russell, who has served District 2 on the Miami Commission since 2015, dropped a prior challenge against U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio this month to instead focus on CD 27.
Other candidates include grassroots Democrat Angel Montalvo, Republican Frank Polo and no-party Ian Anthony Medina.
