Man who threatened Lauren Book pleads no contest

by Margaret Willard

A South Florida man accused of trying to extort $5,000 from the Democratic Senate Leader Lauren Book pleaded no contest Wednesday to a host of charges in the case.

Jeremy Kamperveen of Plantation entered an open plea in Broward County court to extortion, unlawful use of a two-way device and cyberstalking.

He threatened to release explicit photos of Book, who reported the threats to police. Kamperveen was later arrested after setting up a meeting at a Sunrise Starbucks.

Book proposed and won unanimous approval for legislation that makes selling stolen images like this a felony. It awaits the Governor’s signature.
