FIU turned to Virginia Commonwealth University assistant baseball coach Rich Witten to lead a turnaround in the university’s baseball program.
Witten replaces Mervyl Melendez, who was dismissed following six seasons in charge. Witten has never been a head coach.
He was at VCU for five seasons and at Winthrop from 2015-17. Witten said he is “beyond humbled.”
Last season, VCU finished 42-20 and won a second straight Atlantic 10 championship.
“Rich is a proven winner who has a history of leading numerous programs to conference championships, and NCAA Regionals as both a player and coach,” Athletic Director Scott Carr said.
