Expect a tsunami of boaters making waves this Fourth of July weekend, according to projections from the nation’s largest boating advocacy, services and safety group.
The number of assistance calls show a “steep decline” since Memorial Day weekend, according to TowBoatUS. But members say they’re going to get out there – high gas prices have boaters saving for Independence Day forays, officials said.
TowBoatUS’s 24-hour call centers experienced a 22% drop in on-water assistance calls during Memorial Day weekend, possibly depressed by boaters deterred by record gas prices.
Requests for tows from boaters often are a barometer of boating traffic, officials said.
