Blooming partnership aims to restore native orchids

by carlislewillard

One hundred new, native orchids will be taking root at The Museum of Discovery and Science as a partnership blooms between the Fort Lauderdale Orchid Society and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s Million Orchid Project (MOP).

Next week’s budding effort is just the beginning of what the orchid society and the Coral Gables organization aim for: One million new orchids planted in South Florida.

Loss of habitat and climate change threatens the flowers.

The project is the nation’s largest educational outreach program dedicated to orchid conservation, officials say. This summer, 5,000 new orchids that Fairchild propagated will be going into ground.
