South Florida’s Winner and Loser of the Week

Winner: Trolls. Activist Chaz Stevens caused the North Lauderdale City Commission to suspend its invocation after Stevens requested the body make equal time for another greeting: “Hail Satan.” Stevens’ request caused the Commission to pause its invocation practice entirely. Stevens says the stunt is part of a crusade to remove religion from government proceedings.

Loser: Polluters. Miami-Dade County Commissioners are moving forward with a proposed ordinance to raise civil fines – significantly, in many cases – for polluting the region’s waters. The changes aren’t final yet, but if Commissioners ultimately sign off, those penalties could increase by as much as 25 times.
