The Miami-Dade Commission is demanding, through a resolution by Jose “Pepe” Diaz, that state lawmakers enact legislation to speed post-conviction capital punishment proceedings “to the extent possible” for mass shooters.
Eileen Higgins was alone in voting “no” on the item.
Florida has been the site of numerous mass shootings, including incidents at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub and Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland.
Sentencing for the Parkland shooter is underway.
If the sentence is death, Diaz’s item said, execution should come quickly to minimize costs to taxpayers and because there are “almost never questions of identity or guilt” in these cases.
