Loggerhead count in Boca Raton one for the books

by carlislewillard

With just a few more months for sea turtle nesting left, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton is celebrating a standout year for loggerhead nests.

Counting since 1990, only two seasons have brought more than 900 of the endangered reptiles ashore to Boca Raton’s sandy expanse. And it looks like 2022 is on track to be a third time, according to Dave Anderson, sea turtle conservationist at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

It makes sense to Anderson, given the 25 years since conservationist efforts started, and that’s about how long it takes for the sea turtles to reach reproductive age.
