Former Sweetwater Commissioner Sophia Lacayo, who in 2019 was removed office and barred for one year from running for election, is again drawing negative attention – this time for questionable fundraising for her Miami-Dade County Commission campaign.
As Florida Politics first detailed, Lacayo has spent more than $780,000 of her own money to defeat Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and win a County Commission seat. She also owns most of the companies that gave her campaign maximum contributions. All received Paycheck Protection Program loans.
Further, three balloon mortgages Lacayo took out totaling $4.6 million can be traced to the Venezuelan regime.
