JetBlue is buying Miramar-based Spirit Airlines and the fate of the budget airline’s South Florida operations is anyone’s guess.
First, the acquisition that will create the fifth-largest U.S. airline with 34,000 employees must undergo federal regulators’ scrutiny. That’s not expected to be completed until the first half of 2024, according to the Sun Sentinel.
A joint release from the two companies suggests the Spirit brand will melt away in the merger, saying plans are that all aircraft will come with the “JetBlue experience.”
A JetBlue spokeswoman said that plans are for “deepening” the New York-based carrier’s commitment to Florida.
