In a battle featuring mostly backup players on both sides, the Dolphins edged the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-24 Saturday in the opening preseason game for both teams.
The Dolphins held on as a 49-yard field goal attempt by the Bucs on the last play of the game hit the right upright and bounced away.
The headline of the night was the play of third-string quarterback Skylar Thompson, Miami’s seventh-round draft choice this year. He completed 20-of-28 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. Even more important, he had no turnovers.
The Dolphins’ defense also turned two Bucs’ turnovers into points.
