Democratic lawyer Ashley Gantt ousted one of Florida’s most enduring state politicians Tuesday, delivering a win for progressives demanding representation more congruent with their values.
Gantt, a decorated attorney, edged out incumbent Rep. James Bush III, a fellow former educator, by just 447 votes in the Democratic Primary for House District 109.
No one else competed in the race for HD 109, which covers Miami, Hialeah, Miami Lakes, North Miami and Opa-locka.
Bush, who has intermittently held state office for three decades, attracted ire for voting with GOP lawmakers on bills regarding abortion, LGBTQ education and workplace safety, among other issues.
