Miami Gardens Sen. Shevrin Jones won re-election to a second Florida Senate term Tuesday, defeating two fellow Democratic former educators, including one who drew rebukes for comments critics labeled homophobic.
No one else filed to run against him this year.
With 68% of the vote, Jones trounced former Miami Gardens Councilman Erhabor Ighodardo and consultant Pitchy Escarmant, who got 17% and 15% of the vote, respectively.
Described by U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist as “one of Florida’s “brightest political stars,” Jones has distinguished himself as a fighter for voting rights and an effective lawmaker despite his party’s disadvantage in Tallahassee.
