Miami-Dade Commissioners today make $6,000 annually, the same salary set at the County Charter’s 1957 ratification. They really make about $60,000, counting allowances, car stipends and retirement contributions.
A proposal the Commission submitted for the 2022-23 county budget raising their compensation and retirement benefits to $138,000 advanced by a 9-3 vote last week.
Commissioners Jose “Pepe” Diaz, Joe Martinez and Raquel Regalado voted no. A second vote takes place Sept. 20.
Voters have rejected Commissioner pay hikes 13 times since 1967.
Also in the proposed budget: creating an “ambassador” program paying former Commissioners up to $25,000 yearly for event participation and consulting.
