Broward Sheriff faces Ethics Commission censure for not revealing past legal scrapes

by carlislewillard

The state Commission on Ethics found probable cause Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony lied on his way to becoming the top cop for the state’s second-largest county, renewing calls for Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove him from office.

Tony will face either a hearing in front of an administrative judge or negotiate with the Ethics Commission over his censure. The Commission earlier this month rejected the staff recommendation against sanctions for Tony’s failure to reveal past legal scrapes, including his juvenile arrest for murder. The panel can’t suspend Tony, however.

DeSantis appointed Tony in 2019 to replace Sheriff Scott Israel.
