Miami Beach Commission urges principals to defy School Board, teach LGBTQ history

by carlislewillard

Less than a week after the Miami-Dade School Board nixed a planned LGBTQ history month on campuses countywide, Miami Beach officials asked principals to ignore that decision.

Miami Beach Commissioners voted 5-1 for a resolution by Alex Fernandez urging principals to recognize October as LGBTQ History Month, teach related lessons “to the fullest extent permitted by law” and recommend parents do the same at home.

The item also provided sample language so other localities can call for identical action.

“We exist, and we deserve to be recognized,” said Fernandez, who is gay, calling the School Board decision “a step backward.”
