Greater Miami’s oldest standing structure offers uplifting view

by carlislewillard

The oldest standing structure in Greater Miami – the Cape Florida Lighthouse – resides at Billy Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne.

Not only does the park have a view of Biscayne Bay from 100 feet up, but also a chance to walk on history-steeped ground. It’s been recognized as part of the Underground Railroad. Pre-Columbian artifacts have also been found on the park’s 442 acres.

Billy Baggs was a Florida journalist who championed racial equality and preserving natural Florida.  The “Cape of Florida” part of the park’s name derives from Florida’s first Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de Leon.
