Islamorada’s state park offers rare sights carved in history

History meets scientific fascinations at Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park.

The park, located at 84900 Overseas Highway, Islamorada, offers a rare walk through 8-foot high walls of fossilized coral reef, where one can see the complex framework that once lived in the reef.

The park is home to the Key Largo Limestone from which famed industrialist Henry Flagler quarried out some 17 million cubic yards of rock. That’s about 17 million truckloads that was used for filling the approaches to bridges that formed the Overseas Highway.

The 36-acre park also offers rambles through hardwood hammocks and mangrove fringes.
