Late fees will no longer accrue on items borrowed from the Broward County libraries and returned after the due date, the County Commission decided last week.
As of Friday, all late fines were expunged. Patrons are encouraged to return items on time, however, so that others may use them, county officials said. And cardholders are still responsible for lost or damaged items.
Forgiving lateness in library return reflect a national movement.
“This is an exciting step in reducing and eliminating obstacles to library usage that disproportionately impact those without the means to pay,” said Broward County Library Director Allison Grubbs.
