Renewed focus on Florida’s barrier islands

by carlislewillard

Barrier islands form through time as waves deposit sand parallel to the shoreline. Fast forward to the present, development has caught on and residential and commercial establishments have become common sights in these islands.

Florida’s barrier islands received much of the impact of Hurricane Ian, and many structures were damaged. Despite this and the risk of another bigger hurricane with a stronger storm surge is not enough for islanders to move to the mainland.

Amidst this devastation, there is a renewed focus on how island residents can improve their disaster response measures which include faster evacuation and strategic evacuation sites.
