As the Marlins embark on yet another rebuild, they chose Skip Schumaker to be their on-field leader. He becomes the 16th manager in team history, succeeding Don Mattingly.

“Skip has a long list of distinguished accomplishments as both a player and a coach that showcase the remarkable individual he is as well as the high level of credibility and leadership he will bring to the dugout and the Marlins organization,” Marlins chairman and principal owner Bruce Sherman said.

Schumaker was a utilityman during his 11-year big league career.

He spent last season as bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
