Defense carries ‘Canes to sluggish win

by Margaret Willard

It might have been a coyote ugly win, but given recent events, the University of Miami football team will take its 14-12 overtime road victory over Virginia.

The ‘Canes didn’t score a touchdown but managed to survive. That is because their defense held the Cavaliers down.

Miami’s hero was sophomore kicker Andy Borregales, who had four field goals – including one at the end of regulation and two in overtime.

The other UM standout? Punter Lou Hedley, who pinned Virginia five times inside its 20-yard line.

Miami hosts rival Florida State on Saturday. The Seminoles opened as 7.5-point favorites over the Hurricanes.
