Ileana Garcia overcomes controversies to win re-election in SD 36

by carlislewillard

Two years after winning by just 34 votes, Miami Republican Ileana Garcia overcame several controversies to secure a second term representing Senate District 36.

With all votes tallied, Garcia defeated Democratic challenger Raquel Pacheco by 18 points.

Garcia, who has proven herself a deft fundraiser and legislator during her two years in Tallahassee, repeatedly attracted negative press this year for comments she made about racism, abortion and the LGBTQ community.

Also following her into the race was residual negativity surrounding a “ghost candidate” during her 2020 election. No evidence connected her to the plot.

Bottom line: voters like and kept her.
