Plantation City Councilman Nick Sortal unseated incumbent Plantation Mayor Lynn Stoner decisively winning 61% of the vote.
Plantation is the only city among Broward County’s larger cities with a “strong” mayor who runs the city operations instead of a city manager governing model. The Broward County Inspector General found that Stoner had retroactively raised her car allowance without Council approval and violated campaign finance laws and Florida’s Sunshine Law, according to Sun Sentinel reporting.
“I really felt like people were excited about me running and genuinely thought I was the best candidate in the city,” Sortal said in an email.
