Miami-Dade seeks larger federal cost share for potential Metrorail extension

by carlislewillard

When Miami-Dade breaks ground on a possible northern extension to Metrorail, a milestone targeted for 2024, county officials want the federal government to bear most of the cost.

Miami-Dade’s transportation planning board approved a resolution raising the requested Federal Transit Administration cost share to 60% of a $1.9 billion project bringing elevated rail to Hard Rock Stadium.

The county previously sought 40-50% from the FTA, with the county and state splitting the remainder. According to Transportation Planning Organization Director Aileen Bouclé, Miami-Dade since learned of “another metropolitan area that is entering a 60% funding grant agreement for their transit project.”
