Defective bulbs in nearly 250 streetlights are casting Miami-Dade and Broward neighborhoods in purple, according to Florida Power and Light and the Department of Transportation, which are replacing them.
FDOT told WPLG Local 10 that it will replace 137 light fixtures in Broward and 101 in Miami-Dade, adding the phenomenon isn’t unique to South Florida.
“This issue is being experienced at a national level,” said FDOT, which confirmed 300 lights in Central Florida are also impacted.
Some residents enjoy the violet hue. Others complain the reduced visibility endangers bicyclists and pedestrians.
Tampa Electric and Duke Energy are fixing lights too.
