A celebration of Haitian Independence Day in Broward County is coming to Boulevard Heights Community Center in Hollywood with Rep. Marie Woodson leading the festivities.

The event that’s going to be free and open to the public goes from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday at 6770 Garfield St., complete with food, historical presentations, and live music from DJ Nickymix.

Attendees can expect to learn about the history of Haiti, which declared independence from French colonial rule on Jan. 1, 1804, becoming the first country birthed from a slave revolt and ruled by a Black majority in post-colonial Latin America.
