The Legislature has made short-term vacation rentals untouchable to local regulations, but Miami Republican Sen. Ileana Garcia has proposed a law to ensure those responsible for the properties’ upkeep can be reached.
Florida law currently bars cities and counties from prohibiting vacation rentals or capping how long people can stay at them. Further measures to curtail these rentals’ impact on local neighborhoods have failed to get any traction.
Garcia’s bill, SB 92, would allow local governments to pass and enforce ordinances requiring vacation rental operators to provide local governments with contact lists for people who handle complaints about the properties.
