Cruise lines fined $439M for ‘prohibited tourism’ in Cuba

by carlislewillard

Four South Florida-headquartered cruise lines could pay a combined $439 million to American port concessionaire Havana Docks, which for decades lost compensation at piers Fidel Castro’s regime unlawfully confiscated in Cuba.

A federal Judge Friday ruled Carnival, MSC, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean engaged in “trafficking acts” and “prohibited tourism” by taking travelers to Cuba and using the piers, the Miami Herald reported.

The decision could set a precedent for lawsuits against travel providers that previously argued their dealings with Cuba are protected under a “lawful travel” exception created under former President Barack Obama.

All four companies are likely to appeal.
