New law: NDAs can’t shield perpetrators of sexual assault and harrasment

U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel was the lead House sponsor of a new law that will stop nondisclosure agreements from silencing sexual assault and harassment victims.

President Joe Biden signed the Speak Out Act into law on Dec. 7. The law, introduced in the Senate by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, passed by unanimous consent there. And by 315-109 in the House.

“We’re taking the gag off survivors of sexual assault and sexual harassment,” said the West Palm Beach Congresswoman, according to Sun Sentinel reporting.

Many times, Frankel said, people don’t know they are signing these agreements because of wording shrouded in legal “gobbledygook.”
