South Florida’s Winner and Loser of the Week

Winner: Lake Okeechobee The long-awaited renovations to the Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding Lake O are finally complete. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and stakeholders celebrated the milestone with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The dike helps manage water flow and prevent flooding, meaning upgrades can lead to more water being kept in the lake safely.

Loser: Vickie Cartwright Cartwright is out as Broward Superintendent. She left via mutual agreement, but under threat of firing as the state pressured her over allegations she failed to turn over requested documents. The School Board will discuss the final terms of departure next month.
