The largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States were once slated to become a condo but now it can be enjoyed for the $2.50 cost of state park admission.
Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, on C.R. 904, just north of the the U.S. 1 intersection, has 84 protected plant and animal species, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe, and American crocodile.
More than six miles of nature trails that wind throughout the park’s 2,421 acres are accessible to both bicycles and wheelchairs.
The park was named for a late environmental activist.
