As shock spreads over a train derailment that released noxious fumes over an Ohio town, a Miami-Dade city is fearing its own airborne toxic event.
A fire began Sunday afternoon at the Covanta incinerator plant in Doral, a county-owned facility that burns waste to produce energy. Firefighters continue to battle the blaze into the workweek as the building began to cave in.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the county is “continuing to monitor air quality,” though tests so far “have come back clear.” Fire rescue officials have warned nearby residents to remain indoors, “recirculating the air inside the home.”
