Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book is backing legislation to help terminally ill Floridians die on their own terms.
Book filed the “Death with Dignity Act.” The measure, a near copy of legislation former Boca Raton Sen. Kevin Rader filed more than a decade ago, would allow doctors to prescribe lethal medication to dying patients.
A diagnosis of a terminal condition and confirmation by a second physician would be required.
Book’s bill comes after 76-year-old Ellen Gilland fatally shot her husband in a Daytona Beach hospital bed as part of a January murder-suicide pact.
Gilland now faces a first-degree murder charge.
