Spring break started with a swim meet in Ft. Lauderdale

Winters in upstate New York can be brutal with excessive cold and large amounts of snow. Hamilton, New York – home of Colgate University – averages 80 inches of snow annually. In 1935, when the university swim team had a meet in Ft. Lauderdale, it was a welcome break from the weather.

Upon returning home, they told everyone about the beautiful beaches and sunshine. They quickly started planning a return trip in the spring for some fun in the sun.

The trend caught on and continues today, with 40% of college students traveling to warm destinations like Florida for spring break in 2023.
