A bill cementing the powers of Miami-Dade County’s first Sheriff since the 1960s is ready for Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature.
Lawmakers approved HB 1595, one of two measures filed this Session to solidify Sheriff duties and influence. It guarantees Sheriffs countywide jurisdiction, including shared authority in cities with municipal police.
Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2018 requiring all counties to have elected Sheriffs by 2025. Some officials in Miami-Dade, which has an appointed police director, have since fought the change.
That now appears done, evidenced Monday by Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez filing to run for Sheriff next year.
