Miami Lakes school restricts poem written for, read at Joe Biden inauguration

Following a parent’s challenge, the poem written for President Joe Biden’s inauguration is on a restricted list at Bob Graham Education Center in Miami Lakes.

Amanda Gorman, the poet, said she is “gutted” by the K-8’s decision to restrict elementary school student access to “The Hill We Climb,” which references everything from biblical scripture and “Hamilton” to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

The poem and several books, which remain available to middle schoolers, were removed in accordance with policies enacted under Gov. Ron DeSantis that attract ongoing legal action from PEN America and publisher Penguin Random House.
