Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed legislation requiring a plan to be developed to fix one of the all-time mistakes in marine conservation: Osborne Reef, a tire dump off Fort Lauderdale.
Decades ago, some 2 million tires were lashed together with ropes and metal clips to serve as a makeshift home for marine life. It proved disastrous, as the assembly broke apart and scattered during storms, damaging nearby reefs and habitats.
Under a measure by Republican Sen. Bryan Ávila, the Department of Environmental Protection must assess the reef’s current condition, prior cleanup efforts and develop a comprehensive restoration plan by July 2024.
