A Broward jury found Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo liable for violating the First Amendment rights of two local business owners, awarding them $63.5 million in compensation.
The city faces a separate $28 million suit from the plaintiffs, William Fuller and Martin Pinilla, whose businesses the jury agreed Carollo targeted for years with city resources, police and code enforcers as retaliation for their support of his political opponent.
It is not yet certain whether the money will come from Carollo’s bank account or Miami coffers. The city has already spent some $2 million on his legal fees.
Carollo vows to appeal.
